WIT SPORT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES

The Sports Scholarship Programme at WIT offers an athlete led development programme aimed at supporting the overall development of high performance athletes in a wide range of sports. The programme gives talented athletes the opportunity to develop their sporting and academic career by offering a network of support services and expertise which is tailored around the specific needs of each individual athlete.

Each academic year, WIT provides up to 50 Sports Scholarship Awards distributed between four awarding categories which reflect the sporting level a student is competing at within their sporting discipline.

Sport Scholarships available at WIT

Elite

Reserved for athletes who have demonstrated outstanding sporting ability and have a proven track record of success at the highest level. These athletes will have received individual recognition for performances on the national or international stage. These athletes will receive academic fee support, €2,000 bursary and individual support services.

 

Sport Scholarships

Sport Scholarships are given to those students who are excelling in their sport and participating at the highest level they can compete at. Those awarded this scholarship will receive a financial bursary and full support services for the year.

Tier 1: €1,000

Tier 2: €500

 

Emerging Talent 

Individuals who demonstrate that they have the potential to excel in their chosen discipline. The recipient will receive support services to support them in their academic studies and athletic performance. The recipient will also have the opportunity to be awarded a financial bursary within the same academic year as a result of high excellent performances for WIT subject to review by the scholarship committee. The scholarship is primarily for 1 year but students can remain on the programme for a second year if the committee feels they have potential to make the progression to the next level.

Waterford FC Scholarship:

These are awarded to Waterford FC players who WFC have decided to support with their studies. This includes full range of support services and a bursary from WIT and WFC.

Waterpark RFC Scholarship:

These are awarded to Waterpark RFC players who Waterpark have decided to support with their studies. This includes a full range of support services and a bursary from WIT & Waterpark RFC.

Bausch & Lomb Soccer Scholarship:

Each year Bausch & Lomb come on board to support the development of some of our soccer talent who receive the full range of support services.

 

 

MUNSTER

Munster GAA

Each year, the GAA Munster Council part-fund 10 GAA Scholarship Awards for students from Munster. These awards are available in hurling, men’s and ladies’ gaelic football and camogie. Application forms for these are available in September from the WIT Sport Scholarship Office. You can only receive this award for 2 years. GPA wgpa

GPA/WGPA

The Gaelic Players Association and Womens Gaelic Players Associoation part fund a number of GAA/GPA Scholarships for any of our inter county senior hurlers and footballers that have been selected on the previous years championship panel. These players must meet the criteria for these scholarships and more information can be found on the GPA/WGPA website. The bursary awarded from the GPA/WGPA is added to by WIT.

APPLYING FOR A SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP

Once the Scholarship Committee has received an applicant’s completed application form, their application will be fully assessed. Prospective students have until Monday 30 August 2021 to complete and submit their sport scholarship application. Students can apply for a sports scholarship in any given year of study. Applications will be considered from students enrolled on any undergraduate or postgraduate course.

When to Apply:

Applications for 2021-2022 WIT Sport Scholarship programme will open on Monday 1st February and will accept applications until 30 August 2021 at 5pm.

Closing Date:

The final date for Sport Scholarship applications is the 30th of August 2021 at 5pm.

CRITERIA AND ELIGIBILITY

Our Aim

To run an athlete development programme that supports the holistic development of the scholarship student in the pursuit of their sporting and academic goals through a structured network of support services and expertise.

To help increase Waterford Institute of Technology’s profile as a Third Level Institution that is recognised for its high level of sporting background and facilities, prowess and academic accolades.

To help attract and entice athletes to WIT who are of outstanding sporting and educational ability.

Sport

Criteria 

Athletics

Schools Titles, Celtic Games, National Titles or Junior/Senior International representation

Basketball

Playing at Super league Level and may have Ireland Junior/Senior squad representation

GAA

Minor county level and capable of competing at a higher level

Women’s Rugby

Provincial and/or Ireland representation at 7’s or 15’s and IRFU All Ireland League/Leinster League Division 1 Player

Men’s Rugby

Provincial and/or Ireland representation at 7’s or 15’s and IRFU All Ireland League/JP Flanagan Premier Division 1/2 Player

Women’s Soccer

International Junior/Senior player and WFAI Women’s National League/ Women’s Premiership Club Player

Men’s Soccer

Irish Schools or Underage International squad player and League of Ireland Underage/Senior Premier Division/Northern Ireland Football League Premiership Club Player

Other Sports

Proven Junior or Senior International with participation at European/World Championship or Olympic level and part of a high performance squad with their NGB

 

Applications will be considered from current WIT students and also from prospective students.

 In order to be considered for a sport scholarship prospective students must meet the WIT admission requirements through the CAO system and must enrol on a programme of academic study at WIT. Current students must show academic progression and maintain a satisfactory academic standard throughout the duration of their course.

The WIT Viking Sport Office will meet with the Scholarship Committee to consider recommendations for scholarships after the deadline for applications has closed.

Recommendations will also be accepted from Development Officers for current students.

All Applicants shall be notified of the outcome of their application whether they have been successful or not once a final decision has been made.

 

What’s expected:

Sports scholarships are only valid for one year and one year only and must be reapplied for each year.

All scholarship students must maintain satisfactory academic and sporting progress throughout the duration of the scholarship.

In the event of a recipient’s performance falling below acceptable levels / standards or failing to comply with the conditions of the Scholarship Award, the Scholarship Committee reserves the right to withdraw all benefits of the scheme and remove the Student Athlete from the Scholarship Programme.

All Scholarship Students must successfully pass their academic year to be eligible to apply/reapply for the following year.

All scholarship students must sign a sports scholarship contract. Contracts will be made available to scholarship students.

All sport scholarship students must make themselves available throughout the year for various PR or promotion opportunities.

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be fit to participate in their chosen sport by 30th September of the year of the awarding of a scholarship or by a date assigned by the WIT Sports Manager.

Scholarship students must display at all times an appropriate standard of conduct and sportsmanship. Sport scholarship students shall never engage in any activity which may potentially bring the College into disrepute.

Participation in Intervarsity’s, where eligible, is compulsory in the scholarship year. In exceptional circumstances where an athlete is chosen to represent national or other representative squads an athlete may be exempted from participating in the relevant intervarsity where this is a clash.
